August 6, 2026

John opened the meeting at 6 PM in Salman’s absence.

Approximately 33 members attended.

  • One new visitor - P.J. Maloney.  Lives in Haddonfield, recently made Adirondack chairs and planters.

  • Rockler new items - They are offering a blade sharpening service through Humblebee Sharpening SVS.  Price is $0.35/tooth.

  • Primary presentation was given by Rich Turner on the topic of wood bending.  Steam bending demo was not available due to the risk of setting off the fire alarm system in the store.  Instead, he displayed a steam box and several jigs used in the process and explained their use.  Stressed that the heat does the work, not the steam.  He also explained the process of laminate bending and suggested that, although steam bending has its place, most of the time laminate bending is more appropriate, especially for the hobbyist.  Both methods require a significant amount of clamping.  Rather than using many manufactured clamps, he prefers string, dowels and wedges, and wood guides.  Titebond 3 is recommended [because of the longer open time].

  • John discussed the new roles for the guild officers that were set in place at the board meeting.

  • Kevin (in his newly created role of program coordinator) introduced the new future planning of meeting events with the concept of See (demonstrations)/Do (Workshops, techniques, etc.)/Make (Build something). He and Rich Turner have created a plan that will be sent out to the members so they will have advance notice of the meeting events. Secretary’s note - This is a major change in the way the guild will operate.  We hope this will get more people involved.

    • September - Meeting will involve sharpening techniques.  Members may bring in chisels or plane blades to receive instructions on sharpening.

    • October - Meeting will focus on Q & A by the members.  Please prepare woodworking questions for the guild members who have more experience in specialized topics. Remember, we have over 1000 years' cumulative experience in woodworking.  Whatever challenge you are having may already have be solved by others before you.

    • November - Meeting will be the officer elections and another 2 X 4 challenge.

  • Ray (Yes, Refreshment Ray) discussed the upcoming Hopewell Harvest Fair on Saturday, September 19.  They are seeking volunteers to assist with the woodworking demonstrations.

  • Joe Melber displayed a segmented bowl he recently built.

  • A suggestion was made to create a list of emergency contacts for the guild members.  This will be added to the members information sheet.  Any member will be able to opt out for privacy reasons.

John closed the meeting at about 8 PM
